“URBAN POETRY/URBAN DECAY: Saginaw Valley State University, Saginaw, Michigan, November 5-28, 2007 All over the United States, once-thriving factory towns are dying. Decades of poverty and the decline of the automotive business are creating an urban blight that is heartbreaking. The photographs for Laura’s “Urban Decay” artist book project were all taken in Saginaw, Michigan in one very small neighborhood. This exhibition features an installation project based on “Urban Decay,” her entire library of artist books made over the last 10 years as well as a few framed photographs. Newspaper Article and Podcast It was so much fun to have a show in my home town. My family came from all points to attend the opening reception and I was even featured in a the local newspaper, The Saginaw News. After the article came out I got emails and calls from friends I hadn’t heard from in 30 years. It was all quite a treat. Click here to see the full article and to listen to a Podcast interview done by the Janet Martineau, the arts editor at the newspaper. A special thank you to David Littell and everyone at SVSU who made me feel like a star. |

| This photo shows the Urban Decay installation I created for this show. The photos and poetry from my book of the same title were printed on a 23 foot long poster that wrapped around the inside of this walled room. My goal was to have the viewer walk into this small room and be shocked by the scale of the devastation of these burned out, boarded up houses in Saginaw, my hometown and the site for this show. You can learn more about this project here. | ||||||
