This painted book started out as a series of large paintings exploring circles using a limited palette of paint colors. The paintings were an exercise in abstract painting called “exploiting the motif.” Obbligato is defined as the original thought necessary to the performance of a musical piece. These paintings to me were about applying my own original thoughts about paint and composition to a motif as simple and unoriginal as the circle.
